We know, we know. You've been burned before by MMOs that fail to deliver on their promises. We just want to make sure you haven't sworn off any new entrants into the WoW-dominated genre, because Rift is looking good. Damn good.

Trion Worlds is launching the first closed beta for its new high-fantasy MMORPG today, giving gamers all over the world the chance to dig into its graphically superior, highly flexible game for the first time. Get the lowdown on what they'll see in the latest Rift trailer:

"This is a momentous event for the entire Trion team, as well as the fans that have been following Rift since we first announced the game," Executive Producer Scott Hartsman said in a statement. "We've created this deep, vibrant world that's just waiting to be populated with enthusiastic players, and our hope is that gamers will enjoy playing the game as much as we've enjoyed building it."

The closed beta is set to run through Monday, December 6, giving testers the opportunity to level up to 20 and experience the full starting zone for Rift's techno-magical faction, Defiant, and more.

Rift is being developed for Windows PCs and is set for launch sometime in 2011.

Sharkey says: The big draw for me, aside from the game's sharp look, is the flexibility it offers. Choosing a Class and being able to advance through the different skill sets that Soul Trees offer -- and being able to build multiple Soul Trees and swap them out when out of combat -- is huge. At the very least, Rift is well worth keeping an eye on.
