I've lost entire weekends to Civilization games, but this is out of control. Reddit user Lycerius has been stuck in an eternal battle for world domination for 10 years, with no end in sight. His Civilization 2 game has devolved into a stalemate of nuclear war, starvation, and generally bad times. Foreboding, don't you think? Fortunately for him, the collective minds of the internet are banding together to do their best to solve the problem, even going so far as to set up a subreddit dedicated to the endless Civilization 2 game. Now, if only we could get that kind of thing going in real life, we might be able to get some stuff done.
Here's the problem: The three remaining nations (Americans, Vikings, Celts) have each completed their respective tech trees, giving them all nukes. The front lines of the war are clogged with tanks that will simply get blown to smithereens if they manage to break through. No country is willing to declare peace long enough to get the game to end, and the common people are suffering and starving as a result. It's quite the dilemma.
I love that this sort of thing can happen in PC gaming. I imagine Lycerius dutifully transferring his save file from computer to new computer, possibly in a special flash drive held in a velvet pouch. Each turn is taken with the utmost care, each unit delicately placed as he takes a sip of brandy in his digital fortress. His now numerous advisors whisper to him, hoping to break the stalemate. It's all very romantic.
