Game Room is a virtual Avatar arcade.
Today
Microsoft revealed
Game Room, a virtual arcade accessible through your Xbox 360 or PC. Game Room aims to bring classic titles to new audiences this spring, debuting with 30 retro arcade and console titles (including Centipede, Asteroids Deluxe, and Super Cobra). Players will be able to invite friends into their arcades, and can place their games -- boxed, in their original cabinet designs -- anywhere they choose.
Microsoft plans to release new games each week, with over 1,000 classics made available in the next few years. The games will cost between 240-400 Microsoft points ($3-$5), but can also be played just once for 40 Microsoft Points ($.50). Once you purchase a title, you can access it on either your PC or your Xbox 360.
Other Xbox Live features, such as voice chat, online multiplayer (with a Gold account), cross-platform leaderboards, and achievements will make their way into Game Room. The new service also features 1080p visuals and avatar support.
Tyler says: I've always wanted more ways to interact with my 360 avatar, and the Game Room helps remedy that. I'm also digging the move to include the original arcade cabinet designs in Game Room. Speaking as a graphic designer, it's not just the games that have a special place in my heart, but also their associated art. Any parents here excited for the opportunity to share their old arcade experiences with their children?
