Last month the Office of Film and Literature Classification denied Left 4 Dead 2 a rating, effectively banning the game from Australia. In response, Valve submitted an edited version of the game to the OFLC, which has been granted a modified 15+ rating (via Edge Online).

According to the OFLC's report, the edited version addressed the organization's concerns over "depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment" by removing them from the game. Another aspect of the game's first rating, the melee weapons, remain in the edited version.

Valve has another chance at getting the unedited game through the ratings board, though, as it's re-submitted the original game to be re-reviewed on October 22nd. An EA spokesperson explained the decision to news.com.au, that the company hopes that the OFLC will be more lenient on the unedited version of the game because Valve's taken steps to work with the ratings board. If the unedited L4D2 gets a pass, Valve will release a post-launch patch to bring in the original content.

Tyler says: I thought I had it bad back when Mortal Kombat removed the blood from the SNES version of the game, but at least we got dismemberment! Though it's not ideal, at least Australia is getting a version of Left 4 Dead 2. I doubt the OFLC will about-face on its initial decision with the unedited game, because it would set a precedent for other movies or games that were denied a rating to follow Valve's lead and expect the same reversal.

Any Aussie GameSpies out there feel relieved, or does the modified version make you even angrier?
