The first Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter for the PC was different from the console version in a number of ways. It was first-person only, featured slightly more control over your AI squadmates, and was further tweaked for the PC audience. Now, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is getting the same treatment. We managed to spend a bit of time this week with the GRAW 2 multiplayer beta and we have to admit, we enjoyed our time with it.

A new play mode called Recon Versus Assault is what really caught our attention. It borrows a bit from the mercs versus spies multiplayer mode featured in the Splinter Cell series. In this case the assault team acts like the mercs. They're more heavily armed and armored. They have access to weapons like the FN SCAR and MK46 Light Machinegun.

Ranking up can give you entirely new weapons or give you access to goodies like frag grenades.

The recon team focuses more on intel and stealth. Their weapons are suppressed and include the CX-4 carbine, MP5SD and M8 (the now defunct assault rifle that was once destined to replace the M-16). They also have the ability to "tag" enemy soldiers. Once a soldier is tagged, he appears on the overhead map, making him easy pickings for you or your teammates. You can even tag enemies after you're dead via the death cam. However, this camera is static and cannot be moved so you can only see what's in your immediate surrounding area.

Both teams have special classes, such as a Sniper for the recon team and a Scrambler who can "untag" his buddies for the assault team. You'll need to take advantage of these abilities if you want to maximize your chances of completing your objective. The Recon team is tasked with destroying four Air Defense Anti-Tank System, or ADATS, vehicles. To do this they'll have to walk right up to each objective, plant a C4 charge, fall back to a safe location, and blow the target to kingdom come.
