The Warhammer 40,000 MMO is dead. Long live Dark Millennium! In the back and forth tale of THQ's massively multiplayer Warhammer 40,000 game, we're now neither back or forth, but off in an entirely new direction. Dark Millennium is alive, CEO Brian Farrell said today, but it is now a single-player game with multiplayer modes.

It's been a tough year at THQ, with slow sales, axed games, and layoffs. And it appeared the long-in-development (read: expensive) Dark Millennium was next up on the chopping block. Instead, THQ sought a "business partner" to continue its development as an MMO. As Eurogamer discovered, THQ sought but did not find.

"As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO," Farrell told Eurogamer. "However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features."

"Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property."

Personally, I'm happy to hear I won't be doing the MMO grind in Dark Millennium. Are you?
