At least 42 Warhammer Online servers are transferring characters and shutting down.
It's the event that no MMO ever wants to have happen -- server shutdowns.
Gamasutra is reporting that EA/Mythic's
Warhammer Online will be shutting down between 43 and 63 servers in order to consolidate its population. The producer of both
WAR and
Dark Age of Camelot has been plagued in recent months by a number of unfortunate incidents and rumors, including reports of the loss of several members of its customer service and QA teams. Mythic was also hit with its share of company-wide layoffs when EA decided to reduce staff by 11%.
That same third-quarter earnings report also revealed that
Warhammer Online was hovering at about 300,000 subscribers, certainly nothing to sneeze at, but well short of the million or so players industry watchers had expected. A
posting on the official website reveals all the details, showing which servers will be shutting down and to which servers player characters will will now be forced to transfer characters to.
Despite the bad news, however, Mythic remains resolutely upbeat in its future projections for the game. It recently launched the "Bitter Rivals" live event, part of an ambitious expansion schedule for the project Mythic is calling
A Call to Arms.
Allen says: Well this pretty much sucks in every way imaginable. After launching an incredibly well-polished and fun game,
Warhammer Online seems to have lost over 50% of its subscriber base. Sure, you can make a viable business out of a game with 300,000 subscribers, but that does nothing to combat the perception problem. Even if the game is healthy and is just scaling back on unneeded architecture, closing servers is widely regarded as a very bad sign.
