Building on the foundation established in World of Warcraft and its first two expansions, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm adds a variety of new content and offer players the opportunity to rediscover Azeroth and experience the game from a whole new perspective. Players are be able to adventure as two new playable races, achieve new levels of power, take on challenging quests and dungeons in all-new zones, and experience dramatic changes to familiar aspects of the game in the wake of a world-shattering disaster.
In Cataclysm, players will witness the face of Azeroth being altered forever, as the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing awakens from his subterranean slumber and erupts onto the surface, leaving ruin and destruction in his wake. As the Horde and Alliance race to the epicenter of the cataclysm, the kingdoms of Azeroth will witness seismic shifts in power, the kindling of a war of the elements, and the emergence of unlikely heroes who will rise up to protect their scarred and broken world from utter devastation.
It's not supposed to be like this. I've spent the better part of half of year exploring the best parts of innovative MMORPGs like The Secret World, TERA, and the Guild Wars 2 beta. I've long known that World of Warcraft's subscription numbers have dropped significantly. But here I am at 3am the morning before my column is due, forcing myself to quit leveling the Hunter I started a week ago ("Screenshots," I told myself -- "I just need screenshots") and even going to the extremes of shutting off my laptop's wifi. Despite formidable competition, it seems World of Warcraft still retains something of its fabled power to enthrall -- but it's hard to escape the impression that Cataclysm probably wasn't the most auspicious name for Blizzard's third expansion. There's typically a sizable roadblock when trying to convince an ex-WoW friend to return to Azeroth: they're now nowhere near your level, and it will take them weeks of grinding to catch up. Blizzard blasted that roadblock today with the new Scroll of Resurrection, a promotion that allows current subscribers to bring back a friend's old character and instantly boost them to level 80. As great as the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic may have been, let's not forget about the number #1 MMORPG in the land, which is still finding small ways to improve itself. As reported on the official official World of Warcraft blog, there are a slew of small improvements with the now-released Patch 4.3.2, like fixing "Need" rewards during Raid Finder bosses and being able to form same-faction raids with Real ID friends. It's rather fitting that the story arc of the new raid and two of the three new five-man dungeons in World of Warcraft's Patch 4.3 focus so heavily on Northrend. While the supporting characters you encounter consist of a warchief turned hippie and a dragon with anger management issues instead of a madman with a cool sword, the ease with which you can clear the content and snatch up rewards leaves a distinct aftertaste of Wrath of the Lich King. In fact, if anything, it's easier. Read More »
