Once again players assume the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist destined to save the Earth from hordes of gruesome alien attackers. Half-Life 2 takes computer games to a new level of realism with incredible in-game graphics that recreate familiar-looking city streets, and blend them with strange and grotesque monsters, resulting in a believable and at times unsettling environment. Objects and characters feature accurate physics properties, behaving with the appropriate mass, density, and physical properties of their real-life counterparts. Extremely intelligent computer AI result in enemies that plan, adapt, and respond to the player's actions.
Speaking at DICE and appearing next to Star Trek/Star Wars director JJ Abrams, Valve founder Gabe Newell just blew a bunch of minds by stating that Valve is interested in talking about doing a Portal or Half-Life movie -- and that he's in talks with Abrams to do some kind of collaborative project. "We don't go to Ravenholm." Ah, remember Alyx Vance's words back in Half-Life 2? She may not have visited Ravenholm, but you sure did, and you either loved or hated it. It had a completely different tone to the rest of Valve's classic sci-fi opus, as if an entire chapter had been slingshotted from its Orwellian influences into the murk of zombie films. Personally, I loved the doomed little town -- so it's a little sad looking at these leaked screenshots from the canceled Return to Ravenholm project, which, helmed by Arkane, I'm sure would've been kick-ass. If you haven't tooled around with the Empires mod for Half-Life 2, let me tell you, you've been missing out. The full conversion multiplayer mod introduces full-scale 64 player warfare, complete with all sorts of vehicles and huge maps. Today, it gets version 2.4, which adds five new maps, a bunch of visual tweaks, and a slew of bug fixes. Considering it's the first update in nearly two years, it's quite welcome in the community. Those of you who bet that Half-Life 2: Episode 3 (or Half-Life 3) would come out before the Black Mesa Source mod team finally completed their Source-engine update of the original 1998 Half-Life, get ready to pay up. The Black Mesa Source home page is now counting down to September 14th (that's four days before Borderlands 2 and six days before Torchlight 2). But not so fast -- you might get off on a technicality. Read More »
Remember that big Half-Life 2: Episode Three protest that was supposed to take place last weekend? Well, it sort of, uh, didn't. I mean, it occurred, technically speaking, but didn't exactly manage to make the megaton splash its organizers were hoping for. Even after the Steam group ballooned all the way out to 50,000 members, only 13,000 took up crowbars alongside their comrades in arms, according to Kotaku. And the rest? Perhaps they suddenly decided gaming wasn't for them and took up competitive crocheting. Or, slightly more likely: they no-showed, relegating the collective call of "Rise and shine, Mr Freeman" to 11th on Steam's charts. Valve hasn't made any mention of the relatively subdued keyboard warrior rallying cry, and I'm guessing it won't pipe up until it's good and ready. Read More »
